I read her book during a backpacking trip. Sleeping in the jungle myself, Ingrid Betancourt's letters turned into pictures. I felt captivated throughout the whole book, I thought I could smell the jungle and felt the itch of mosquito bites, looked into the faces of drunken guerillas who took pleasure in seeing me suffer. I was fascinated how Betancourt found a sense of life again and again, while I lost it trice thinking of her numerous failures to escape, and I kept asking myself if I was ever able to survive six years of this green and humid hell. Her precise description of sensations and emotions, intimidated and full of fear, taught me to value freedom more than anything else. "Even silence has an end" is a book that certainly won't unchain the reader but takes him or her hostage as long as it takes.
This story was a gripped throughout the almost 600 pages.I have enormous respect for Ingrid Betancourt and how she handled herself under the worst of conditions. After she and about 60 other captives we're finally freed, the disparaging public comments made about her by fellow captive prisoner, Keith, one of the three Americans also held hostage, disgusted me. None of us know exactly how we would behave under such horrible condition The way that she conveyed her feelings about his abuse of her, showed that she is the bigger person. Much bigger.
I chose this rating because I have spent nearly 30 years in various countries and I know the attractions and dangers of living overseas. Naturally,I was drawn to the events in this woman's life. I couldn't help admiring and feeling a sense of pride in her courage. In many biographies women are depicted as helpless victims of the situations in which they find themselves. Quite recently, I have read several biographies in which women faced with horrendous odds remained determined to change their conditions; this has been one of them. I would recommend this book to every woman who has ever wondered what it is like to live in a country which is in a state of constant revolution. Mrs. Betancourt,was not only confronted with the possibility of being killed by her captors, but even in freeing herself was confronted by the dangers she would encounter in the Amazon jungle.
